Give A Little Bit: Spring2Action with Higher Achievement on April 17th!

Happy Friday All!

Spring is finally here! We’ve been experiencing such great weather here in The District this week that has just been too good to be true. Today, I want to share with you all an online event that will take place next week that will benefit a really cool group of young people.

To provide a little background, I have spent the last ten months completing my year of service as an AmeriCorps VISTA at Higher Achievement DC Metro. Higher Achievement is a four-year, year-round rigorous academic program for middle school students. Not only are our scholars exposed to enriching academic activities, but they are provided with the opportunity to grow their leadership, social and cultural skills that will prepare them for high school and beyond. My time with Higher Achievement has allowed me to further discover my passion for education and closing the opportunity gap for all students, and it has also exposed me to the amazing talents of our 5th – 8th grade scholars. While my work primarily deals with the alumni of our program, each week I am fortunate enough mentor scholars at our Ward 6 Achievement Center. I am seriously blown away at how witty, funny, bright and intelligent these students are. And as our afterschool academy is coming to an end, we are preparing to transition our scholars into summer academy, a six week program with continues to build upon their skills.  According to the National Summer Learning Association “more than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities.” At Higher Achievement, we do our best to combat that statistic with engaging curricula and fun activities such as weekly field trips and college visits. Learn how you can contribute to their summer learning gains after the jump!

So now to the good stuff: On April 17th, Spring2ACTion Alexandria will be hosting a 24-hour online fundraiser to promote and educate the community about important causes of many organizations in Alexandria, VA and the DC Metro area. Last year, Higher Achievement raised close to $5,000 with the help of our generous mentors and champions, and this year we want to surpass that goal! Below is more information on how you can help spread the word and join me in donating to such an amazing cause.
